10 September 1940 - Death of Mr JOSEF FELIX BUTLER
Born in Canton Argau, Switzerland 80 years ago, Mr Josef Butler who died suddenly at New Plymouth had been in Taranaki since 1884 and had lived for a long time in the Inglewood district. Though he had been in failing health his death was unexpected.

Two years after his arrival in NZ Mr Butler married Miss Ida Fischer and shortly afterwards he took up a bush section on Suffolk Rd farming it successfully for many years before moving to Dudley Rd. There Mr & Mrs Butler lived with their family for several years before retiring to New Plymouth 20 years ago.

Mr Butler was of a retiring disposition but he took a keen interest in the farming community and its activities and was highly respected by all with whom he was associated.

Before the funeral on Thursday Requiem Mass was celebrated at St Joseph's Church, New Plymouth by the Rev Father Heavey who also conducted the service at the graveside. There was a large attendance of friends and relatives, more than 60 cars comprising the cortege. The pall-bearers were six grandsons, Messrs Eric Bocock, Gordon Herlihy, John Butler, Raymond Butler, Clement Fabish & Harry Hall. Four grandsons who carried the flowers were Messrs Barney Butler, Kevin Butler, Michael Herlihy & Alan Butler.

Mr Butler is survived by two brothers Mr John Butler Tariki & Mr Kaspar Butler, Inglewood, two sisters, Anna & Martina, both of whom live in Switzerland, and by a widow and family of 13. The sons are Messrs John Butler, Whakatane, Fred Butler, Norfolk Rd, Joseph Butler, Huirangi, Edward Butler, Oeo, & Walter & Leonard Butler, Eltham. Daughters are Mesdames M Bocock, Stratford, W Herlihy, Kaimata, B Fabish, Dudley Rd, J Hall, Pungarehu, J Chamberlain, Kaponga, J Stachurski, Ratapiko & L.G. Smith, New Plymouth. There are 69 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

25 September 1946 - A Requiem Mass was celebrated for IDDA BUTLER at St Joseph's Catholic Church,
New Plymouth, officiated by Reverend Father BUTLER and Reverend Father Minogue.
Pall Bearers: Mr Clem FABISH, Mr Dave HERLIHY, Mr Alan BUTLER, Mr Harry HALL, Mr Ray BUTLER and Mr Barney BUTLER.

Flower Bearers: Mr GIANOTTI, Mr W BUTLER, Mr T BURKETT and Mr O STEINER

The Cemetery: Te Henui, New Plymouth, buried on September 25th 1946.
